"Additional applause is due to tenor Tuomas Katajala in the role of Bacchus: his singing is consistently even and strong, yet at the same time constantly directed toward superhuman spheres. His voice is Olympian and in many ways almost divine – both in the carefulness of his diction, the stability of his emission, and in the fact that it combines at once Apollonian clarity and Dionysian force."

R. STRAUSS`S ARIADNE AUF NAXOS (BACCHUS) AT TEATRO DELL´OPERA DI ROMA 02-03/2026
Conductor Maxime Pascal & director David Hermann
THE REVIEWS OF THE PRODUCTION:
"Perfectly suited to the role, dark-toned and stage-charismatic, Tuomas Katajala is a musically majestic Bacchus: beautiful, almost cursed, and physically sensually believable in the face of the protagonist’s love-driven turmoil. He also masters the challenging high register effortlessly and with heroic self-assurance. Although Strauss gives Bacchus a part that is heavy and less impactful compared to the female roles, Katajala manages to bring out the very best from it."
- Emiliano Metalli / Banquo.it
"Tuomas Katajala (Bacchus) is a Finnish tenor who, after Rossini and Mozart, is now moving into Weber, Wagner, and Strauss – and not without reason, one could say, as his voice has powerful volume, excellent projection, and a beautiful silvery timbre."
- Maurizio Modugno / Rivistamusica.com
"Alongside her, Tuomas Katajala interprets Bacchus with a convincing use of his voice and takes command of the notoriously demanding role. His stage presence helps create an almost visionary atmosphere in the finale, which follows the transformation of tragedy into the manifestation of love."
- Loredana Margheriti / Progettoitalianews.net
"The sad and painful aspect of the story emerges in the sorrowful and inconsolable Arianna, performed by Axelle Fanyo, who dominates the score until the rescuing baritenor Tuomas Katajala in the role of Bacchus arrives. His warm, full, and well-projected voice brings a resolution to the drama and carries it to an emotionally stirring, happy ending."
- Alessandro Murzi / Viviroma.it
"Healing Ariadne's heart is not the work of mortals but a divine task – Bacchus'. It is carried out by Tuomas Katajala, whose voice can be described as deep and reassuring.
Placed in the modern era, in jeans and a shirt, Bacchus is built above all on voice. Without exaggerated visual means, Katajala creates his character purely through vocal means – a choice that highlights his vocal strengths and lets the voice carry the entire stage effect."
- Francesca Romana Moretti / Quartapareteroma.it
"The opening night cast was first-class. The duet, performed by soprano Axelle Fanyo (Ariadne) and tenor Tuomas Katajala (Bacchus), was very well sung, although the director’s choices could have emphasised the pathos of the scene more. Katajala displayed a beautiful lyric voice, which he carried faultlessly throughout this demanding role."
- Pia Maltri / Bachtrack.com
"The cast consisted of specialists in this operatic genre. The score includes many characters, two of which were assigned to the same singer: they appear in the prologue and in the following opera as Primadonna–Ariadne and Tenor–Bacchus. These two roles in particular achieved the most spectacular success of the evening for their performers.
..The same applies to the Finnish tenor Tuomas Katajala, who brought consistency to his two roles, Tenor and Bacchus. He also succeeded in performing the final duet convincingly together with Fanyo, which is one of the most demanding passages of the opera."
- Claudio Listanti / Aboutartonline.com
"Ariadne sings the lament of the abandoned woman as a long outpouring of tears, stemming from noble 18th-century models but carrying more clearly the influence of Ludwig van Beethoven. This continues at least until Bacchus arrives on stage – performed by tenor Tuomas Katajala – a beautiful young man who has disembarked from a ship, the Dionysian love of that unpredictable union which Zerbinetta had foretold. However, Ariadne mistakes him for the god of death, a terrifying figure wandering in a black peplos.
The god of wine and ecstasy (Katajala) delivers his vocal line with natural voice production, maintaining good intonation in all the difficult passages leading toward the emerging love. The scene, which forms a significant and self-contained episode – a long and demanding duet with Ariadne – tests the performers’ skills severely. It drives the music toward the height of passion and concludes, as the events resolve, in an atmosphere of divine transformation.
The transition to another dimension occurs gradually through increasing vocal and orchestral pathos, which is highly captivating, warm, and intense.
The performance is realized with brilliant vocal technique, sensitivity, and technical mastery – like renewed interpreters of Tristan und Isolde."
- Cinzia Dichiara / Tusciatimes.eu
"Tuomas Katajala has an excellent voice, which allows for an outstanding performance of the role of Bacchus: in the final duet, the Finnish singer – whose central repertoire consists of Richard Wagner’s operas, as those who heard him in the role of the Helmsman in Der fliegende Holländer at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia will remember – sings centered, ethereal phrases, supported by a full and brightly resonant middle voice."

DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at Grand Auditorium in Luxembourg & at Bozar in Brussels 2025
Luxembourg Philharmonic & conductor Tarmo Peltokoski
- Alain Steffen / Pizzicato
Many renowned tenors have struggled with the role of Erik throughout the years, as it is demanding and far from easy. I must admit: I have never heard anyone sing this role as beautifully and flawlessly as the Finnish tenor Tuomas Katajala. Katajala has flawless vocal control, a secure upper register, and a very pleasant timbre."
- Andreas Drey / Crescendo Magazine
"Tenor Tuomas Katajala's highly heroic heldentenor voice elevated the level of the male soloists to a new height. Strong but not heavy, dark and light, flowing forward – his voice sparkled in the maritime atmosphere of this production. His entrance ignited with the exclamation, “Senta! Willst du mich verderben?”, he shone in his aria “Willst jenes Tags du nicht sich mehr entsinnen”, and continued to shine all the way to Senta’s sacrifice. A great pleasure.”
- Dominique Joucken / Forum Opera
”Tuomas Katajala has on his side the youthful tone of his voice, his passion, and a flawless and controlled singing style that practically bursts with energy. He portrays Erik as a figure rising from the ranks of eternal losers, painting a picture of a young lover who causes Senta to break down on several occasions – and it’s no wonder that the Dutchman feels jealous.”
- Jean-Nico Schambourg / Klassik begeistert
”The thankless role of Erik is sung by the Finnish tenor Tuomas Katajala. His piercing tenor voice, sometimes sounding slightly tearful, perfectly suits the role of the rejected lover, which he performs with great dedication.”

Tuomas Katajala, who sang the role of Idomeneo, expressed despair and horror with his metallically slashing, flexible tenor. Idomeneo is already ready to kill his son. However, peace and love eventually triumph, and the performance ends with charming wedding ballet music.

LOHENGRIN at Savonlinna Opera Festival (Lohengrin) 07-08/2024

"Für Stoffe wie Richard Wagners „Lohengrin“ könnte der Bau bühnenbildnerisch nicht besser erdacht sein. - Eero Tarasti, Amfion.fi
"Elsa and Lohengrin, the opera's main roles, built a perfect vocal ensemble.
The other pillar of the opera is Lohengrin's Grail story at the end, when he finally reveals his name. Tuomas Katajala elevated it to sublime power with his strong interpretation, while usually tenors' strength starts to wane at this stage."
- Samuli Tiikkaja, Hs.fi
"In his debut in the title role of Lohengrin, Tuomas Katajala's pure and direct tenor voice also possesses the dramatic power required by Wagner."
- Riitta-Leena Lempinen-Vesa / Ita-savo.fi
"Tuomas Katajala makes a great debut in the demanding and significant role of Lohengrin. Katajala's voice resonates freely, strongly, and high, with seemingly endless power. The large role fits Katajala well, and the image of the mythical knight is clearly depicted. Katajala's Lohengrin is a distant figure, an unknown savior who does not live in the same reality as the original inhabitants of Brabant.

Teatro alla Scala Milano / Mahler´s Das Lied von der Erde 09/2003
Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi & conductor Andrei Boreyko
- Alessandro Arnoldo / Artesnews.it
"Heading The opening of Das Trinklied von Jammer der Erde gallops with the first calls of the brass, but Tuomas Katajala has no trouble bringing forth his radiant vocal quality, even tinting the passages where he sings about the pains of life and the certainty of death with humor. In Von der Jugend, Katajala and the orchestra engage in a genuine quarrel that recalls the joyful spirit of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn. Similarly, in Der Trunkene im Frühling, the tenor speaks of comfort 'in the bottle' as if he were possessed by a divine lesson"
-Emiliano Michelin / Operaclick.com
”Tuomas Katajala is a tenor with a clear and homogeneous voice, very effective and euphoric in outlining the verses of his Lieds”
I. Stravinky´s Oedipus Rex (Oedipe) 05/2023
Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi & conductor Andrei Boreyko
- Stefano Balbiani / Connesiallopera.it
”The Finnish tenor Tuomas Katajala, whose operatic repertoire ranges from Mozart to Wagner and Weber, already applauded on these boards a few months ago in the second act of Parsifal, plays the role of the protagonist (Oedipus). Katajala stands out for his ringing, homogeneous and soft emission, voluminous and with a bright metal, well projected and of seductive clear and malleable texture. The effectiveness and care in presenting the word, the clarity in diction, the ease in the high notes, and the interpretive elegance are also appreciated, qualities showcased from the opening aria "Liberi, vos liberabo a peste". At the end, there was a warm and enthusiastic success from the large audience present in the hall, with peaks of enthusiasm for Katajala and Maestro Boreyko.”

”It's the tenor Tuomas Katajala who convinces the most: clear and powerful timbre, concern for the text, clarity of pronunciation.”

”The voice of the day is the one of Tuomas Katajala, a bright and very sharp tenor voice whose art of phrasing and musicality in every instant wins all the votes.”

Benjamin Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings places the Finnish tenor Tuomas Katajala and horn player Antoine Dreyfuss face to face in a colorful dialogue where the words flow back and forth between them. The two soloists deliver a perfectly convincing interpretation of this original exchange, where one can admire the vocal qualities of Tuomas Katajala, whose timbre, power, and diction are discovered in Paris, as well as the beautiful, nuanced sound and virtuosity of Antoine Dreyfuss, the horn soloist of the orchestra.

Finnish National Opera / Das Rheingold / Loge
Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen & director Anna Kelo
- Harri Kuusisaari / rondoclassic, rondo.fi
”From the role debuts the most impressive one is Tuomas Katajala's Loge. With his expressive tenor voice he shows the demigod's intelligence, guile and insurgency.”
- Göran Forsling / Seenandheard.com
"Possibly the best singing of all was delivered by Tuomas Katajala as the red-haired Loge. Seemingly effortless beauty of tone and expressive acting characterised his performance."
- Andreas Wahlberg / Olyrix.com
"...while Tuomas Katajala's Loge wavers in a credible way between excitement and melancholy or whispering, always with a clear and warm tenor voice."
- Göran Forsling, seen and heard international
"His tenor colleague Tuomas Katajala is an excellent David with lyric glow and elegant acting."

London Royal Opera House, Covent Garden / The Magic Flute / Tamino
- Céline Wadoux, Olyrix.com
"Tuomas Katajala, at the awakening of his character, extend this euphony thanks to the agility of his technic and the warmth of his tone quality. Hero on a full quest or enchanter musician, he imposes also his stage presence when Tamino is forced to shut up. His duos with Pamina, the soprano Janai Brugger, are precisely done, their vocal lines always regular."

Der Freischütz (Max) European Tour with Paris Insula Orchestra / Aix-en-Provence, Grand Théâtre
Véronique Boudier, olyrix.com
"Max, Agathe's fiancé and unfortunate shooter, is sung by the Finnish tenor Tuomas Katajala. He carries out this romantic role with ease and succeeds in incarnating this antihero. His articulated and declamatory voice has a soft timbre and easy, well-projected high-pitch notes. He thus portrays an alternately scared and influenceable character."
- Frederic Bodin, fredailleurs.fr
”This is a tenor I hadn't known before. Category Mozart singer, but with a lot of body in the timbre, for sure also a wonderful Tamino or Ottavio. Tuomas Katajala perfectly projects his velvety voice without weakening in the high-pitch notes. He possesses a very elegant singing line, and his interpretation of the pusillanimous antihero is very convincing. A very beautiful Max, whom I really hope to hear again.”
